Mary, The Blessed Mother
The Presentation of Mary in the Temple

The Blessed Mother's central role in Christianity is obviously well represented in all sacred art. The many facets of her life, especially the events portrayed in the Mysteries of the Rosary, appear in the stained glass windows of the majority of Christian churches. There are, in fact, churches whose stained glass is devoted almost entirely to Mary.
Mary's earliest appearance is in The Presentation in the Temple by her parents, Joachim and Anne. Subsequently depicted are The Annunciation, when the words of the "Ave Maria" are announced by an angel, The Wedding of Mary and Joseph, The Visitation, when Mary travels to be with her cousin Elizabeth, The Nativity, The Flight to Egypt, The Wedding at Cana, at which Jesus performs the first miracle, and various events during the public ministry of Christ, most notably The Death of Joseph, The Carrying of the Cross and The Crucifixion. The Nativity, which along with The Resurrection is the most important event in Christianity, is treated elsewhere on this website. The final event in Mary's life is The Descent of the Holy Spirit. The Assumption into Heaven and The Coronation as Queen of Heaven take place after the death of Mary.
