"For Unto Us A Child Is Born"

St. Bartholomew Church, White Plains, NY
The Nativity of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago has inspired artists and composers of the Western world for well over a thousand years. In music, masters from the tenth century onward set the Latin text of the Mass and other sacred texts specific to Christ's birth. In painting and subsequently stained glass, the Nativity has received more attention than any other scene in the Christian canon.

Depictions of the Nativity reveal a variety of elements. The infant is sometimes awake. The Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph appear in different positions. The shepherds and animals are often present along with the Magi. The star of Bethlehem and the sky, the angels and musicians, the manger and other scenery all receive varying emphasis. And the portrayal sometimes consists solely of the Infant, Mary and Joseph.
